25.000 Baleias: Censo Aéreo Confirma Recuperação da População Brasileira

Nem parece que há apenas três décadas as baleias jubarte brasileiras estavam caminhando para a extinção como resultado da caça indiscriminada!
Mas felizmente as ações de conservação chegaram a tempo, e ao longo de seus quase 35 anos de existência o Projeto Baleia Jubarte pôde contribuir de forma decisiva para sua recuperação. E o resultado está aí: nosso mais recente censo aéreo, realizado em agosto entre São Paulo e o Rio Grande do Norte, parceria com a empresa Socioambiental e com apoio financeiro da Veracel Celulose e da Petrobras, confirmou que a população brasileira da espécie se encontra perto da recuperação total, com uma estimativa de aproximadamente 25.000 baleias nessa população.
O censo aéreo, considerado o mais extenso do mundo para o estudo de baleias, acontece há 21 anos e cobriu nesta temporada de reprodução das jubartes uma distância de 6.204 Km, entre a divisa do Ceará e Rio Grande do Norte e o litoral norte de São Paulo, e abrangeu desde a linha de costa até uma profundidade aproximada de 500 metros, já que as jubartes preferem ficar sobre a plataforma continental quando chegam ao país para se reproduzir.
